Postdramatic Theatre and Form (Reminder)

With apologies for cross-posting!

Postdramatic Theatre and Form
Call for Submissions

Editors: Shane Boyle, Matt Cornish, Brandon Woolf
Email: postdramatictheatre@gmail.com

Postdramatic theatre has become an important category for discussing and reflecting on contemporary performance. As conversations aboutpostdramatic theatre have proliferated over the past decade, however, so too have the meanings of the term and the practices it is presumed to describe. Postdramatic Theatre and Form will examine the stakes of continuing to use “postdramatic” as a lens for studying performance today.

This edited volume will advance the scholarly discourse on postdramatic theatre and also provide a collection of highly teachable essays. We invite contributions that examine how the category of  the “postdramatic” creates a pressing need to interrogate theatrical form. As well as studying formal elements of postdramatic theatre, essays submitted for consideration could compare postdramatic theatre to other performance forms or deploy an expanded understanding of form itself:

1) What formal elements give shape to postdramatic theater? Essays might consider the “aspects” identified by Hans-Thies Lehmann--space, time, media, bodies, and text--but could also move beyond this catalogue.

2) What distinguishes postdramatic theatre from other contemporary forms of performance, such as Live Art, postmodern dance, the avant-garde, or devised performance? What does postdramatic theatre today share with historical theatrical forms or genres of non-Western performance? What is occluded by using the term “postdramatic” to understand those forms?

3) How does the practice of postdramatic theatre challenge conventional modes of artistic production--the formal structures of ensembles, the institutional forms that present performances, and the forms of labor theatre requires? What is at stake when postdramatic theatre becomes a brand useful for marketing and for funding applications?

A timely investigation of both the aesthetic structures and political infrastructures of contemporary performance, Postdramatic Theatre and Formwill refine what we mean, and what we don’t, when we speak of postdramatic theatre.
