Performance Phenomenology Seminar

Stuart Grant and Matt Wagner

ALL WELCOME

Wednesday February 25
2:00pm - 4:30pm

Venue: TB6 - Teaching Block, Room 6
Stag Hill Campus, University of Surrey, Guildford

This seminar opens up the fundamental relationships between the phenomenological and the performative. We will proceed in four stages, considering: 1) a brief history of key concepts of phenomenology (specifically framed by the core concept of ‘intentionality’); 2) a brief overview of key scholarly works with respect to the study of performance, sampling the uptake of phenomenology as a critical tool in theatre and dance scholarship; 3) an investigation into the performative imperative in Heidegger, revealing the origin of the concept of the performative within phenomenology; and 4) an overview of a phenomenological approach to Shakespearean theatre, modelling one way in which a specific performative convention might be read phenomenologically.

This is the 3rd event in the Performance Philosophy seminar series in the Department of Theatre & Dance at the University of Surrey.
