My research interests currently focus on two key areas. The first is around issues of materiality, analyzing and investigating the different implications of the interchange between the human subject and the physical object in various contexts of art and performance practice. Within that, the research examines the role of objects and materials in performance practice and its reception, considering notions of ‘performativity’ and ‘agency’ raised by the spatio-temporal encounter between subject and object. I also link my investigation in this field to wider ideas in cultural, social and political studies.
The second key area of research focuses on the ongoing revolutions and uprisings in the 'Middle East' region and their wider cultural and social implications. I specifically look at protest and activism as creative acts and the role of the diverse dynamics of creative and urban practices in sustaining narratives of democracy, redefining notions of citizenship, identity and belonging. I am currently working on a research project entitled ‘Cultural Practices / Resistant Acts: Cultural Production and Emerging Democracies in Revolutionary Egypt,’ which addresses a multiplicity of questions within this research area, building on the inherent relationship between political discourse and artistic disciplines.
