Division of Labor - Denis Beaubois

Posted by Gabrielle Senza on February 23, 2018 at 0:36 0 Comments

I just came across Denis Beaubois, an Australian multidisciplinary artist whose work, Currency - Division of Labor might be of interest to researchers here.

It is a series of video/performance works that use the division of labor model in capitalism as a structural tool for performance.

From his website:

The Division of labour work explores…

Latest Activity: Jun 14, 2018

Madison Performance Philosophy Collective (est. 2013) is a new, interdisciplinary assemblage of artist-scholars in the Madison, WI area. We are a regional branch of the international Performance Philosophy research network.

Our current members are Tom Armbrecht, Erin Briddick, James Burling, Jill Casid, Paola Hernandez, K. Frances Lieder, Tomislav Longinovic, Megan Marsh-McGlone, Jon McKenzie, Dijana Mitrovic, Mark Nelson, Frederic Neyrat, Michael Peterson, Jen Plants, Andrew Salyer, Katrina Schaag, and Christopher William Wolter.  Our interests and experiences range from theatre and drama to relational aesthetics to new media to political philosophy, and we are each, to varying degrees, both artists and scholars. We are excited to welcome others into our group!

We have received a grant from Performance Philosophy for our April 2014 interim event, "Mad Theory." This theory-practice symposium will be a space for the robust community of Madison performance-philosophers and philosopher-performers to showcase their current work, theorize together about the intersections between their own scholarly and artistic practices, stage philosophical discussion as performance, and generate new knowledge.

In addition to our core questions about theory-practice, we are also strongly invested in democratizing knowledge and promoting a de-hierarchized form of performance philosophy beyond the “ivory tower.”  Accordingly, we will actively engage in community outreach prior to, during, and after this event, investigating key questions at the heart of performance philosophy while also building and strengthening community between artists and scholars within and outside of academic institutions.

Hello, all! I should explain my interest in this forum. Though I'm now a Theatre PhD in Ireland, I spent a fair few years in Madison working to make its community theatre a strong exploration of its local flavor and a site of experimentation (I was the ED of the Bartell, taking over just after it lost its primary funder and developing its volunteer and fundraising programs). In 2013 I took the opportunity to further my interest in immersive, agentive interaction in performance with a Master's degree in Europe and continue to pursue theorisation of this style through Deleuze and Merleau-Ponty in my PhD. While I'm grateful for the chance to do so, I am sorry I left before the Mad Theory conferences! Are there plans to develop a third?

Call for Proposals for MAD THEORY 2: A Performance Philosophy Symposium

Madison Performance Philosophy Collective invites individuals and groups to propose lecture performances, experimental talks, live art, interactive installations, roundtable discussions, collaborative praxis-based workshops, site-specific work, durational work, relational aesthetics, and digital media at the intersection of performance and philosophy or theory and practice more generally. We welcome a diversity of approaches, styles, and methods. Some sessions may be more heavily weighted toward either scholarship or live art, while others may attempt to strike a balance or produce a hybridization between performance and philosophy. Regardless of a project’s format, an emphasis on participation – such as audience interaction or response structures – is encouraged.

Proposals Due Monday, February 2nd

Hi,

Hope its ok to post here a few questions re proposals..

* How long workshop sessions might be?
* Can there be more than a single session? (ie 3 workshops on 3 different days/occasions..)
* Is there a particular physical environment space/place you prepare for workshops?
-- If so, do you have image/images?
-- If not, can you provide some information about possible spaces and times..?

Cheers and many thanks!

Thanks for invite!  I hope to be joining you there in the Fall.  If possible, would love to get to your April event as well. I applied for a postdoc fellowship to research the relationship & possible symbiosis of the sacred-secular, working with William James' 'Varieties of Religious Experience' and aspects of my own performance practice/research. Would love to know what you all are doing/thinking/researching in this ever-becoming-field of Performance Philosophy.
